Anthropic Halts Access to AI Models in Response to US Security Directive

In a dramatic turn of events, Anthropic has suspended access to its cutting-edge AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, following a government directive citing national security concerns. This decision follows a direct order from the U.S. government, mandated mere days after the rollout of these powerful tools, which were designed to enhance software security and reliability.

According to a statement released late Friday, the directive explicitly prohibits access to both models for foreign nationals, including Anthropic’s own international employees. The order was issued at 5:21 PM ET, compelling the company to take swift action to ensure compliance.

“We are adhering to the government’s legal requirements and have deactivated Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users,” Anthropic stated. Fortunately, other AI models from the company, such as Opus 4.8, remain unaffected by this directive.

Government Concerns and Industry Implications

The government's concerns reportedly stem from a potential “jailbreak” method that could allow users to bypass the security safeguards inherent in Fable 5. While specific details regarding the threat have not been disclosed, Anthropic emphasizes that the evidence presented to them thus far has only been verbal.
